The Smartsack Company, which creates award-winning storage solutions for primary schools, has been working in partnership with Continuum since the development of its first prototype in 2007 up until now where the company’s range of products are in over 400 UK primary schools.
Former school teachers James and Jeanette Smart had seen the storage problems in schools first hand. Their idea for SMARTSACK™ was to create an over-the-chair storage system to allow pupils to keep all essentials close to hand and easily pick up and carry them into a variety of learning environments.
The Smarts approached Continuum with their SMARTSACK™ concept very early on, when the idea was still at the drawing stages. It quickly became apparent that the fastest way to develop a successful prototype was to have an experienced seamstress mock up a sample product in the UK and then to take this to the manufacturing partners in China.
Continuum used its network of contacts to source the best manufacturer which developed multiple versions of the product, each one a gradual improvement on the one before. Throughout production Continuum’s team on the ground in China remained in constant contact with The Smartsack Company and worked with them to find solutions and overcome challenges. Six months later the final version won Best Business Idea at the New Scotland Awards, was a finalist at the Biggart Baillie Innovation Awards and launched at the UK’s leading education management event – the Northern Education Show in Manchester.
Continuum has since supported The Smartsack Company on product design, sourcing and marketing of its range of unique educational storage solutions. These include the SMARTSACK ‘peg’ which solves the problem of cloakroom clutter and the SMARTSACK Scrunch™ designed to help with easy identification of pupils while on school trips and to allow pupils to carry materials for outdoor learning.
